| Headliner Pics supplied by PeterH from the Australian Range Rover and Discovery Forum.
The internal roof and headliner on Classic Range Rovers is made up of a fiberglass shell, onto which the headlining material is glued.
The headlining material itself is made up of two parts, a 'velour' like material which has a thin foam backing.
Over time, the foam can seperate from the velour and cause the dreaded roof sag common to Range Rovers, so it is not the glue coming unstuck from the shell as it would appear, but rather the material seperating from itself.

not pretty!
Replacement can be done by yourself, it is a fairly straight forward job if you can obtain the correct material and glue.
I used this excellent information from J Purnell's web site:

Worth printing out and having with you as you do the job.
With some helpfull photos from here:

I took me about an hour for each stage,so an hour to remove the shell, an hour to clean the old foam off the shell, an hour to glue and trim the new headlining and an hour to reinstall.
I was lucky enough to find the exact same headlining material in the same colour as the original. I live in Melbourne and was put onto a motor trimmers supply place called Daley's, in Leo St,Fawkner, north of Melbourne.
I needed 3 meters of material at $25.90 a meter which came to $85.47 and the proper 3M adhesive which was $31.68 for the can. So all up it was $117.15.
Working around the sunroof will slow things down a bit, just go slowly and try not to damage anything.
When glueing the new material onto the cleaned shell start at the back and work forward, the hardest part is getting the material to stretch around the moulding for the sun visors.
The sunroof itself will come apart, the material section unclips and slides out.
Mine looks great 12 months on, just like new, well worth the effort.
Good luck! |
